What is hip replacement surgery?

The hip is the largest ball-and-socket joint in the body. When the cartilage cushioning it wears away, bone grinds against bone, and every step becomes painful.

In a total hip replacement (also called total hip arthroplasty), your surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage and replaces them with a precisely fitted implant: a new socket in the pelvis and a smooth ball on a stem set into the thigh bone. The result is a joint that glides again instead of grinding.

Our surgeons use modern, muscle-sparing techniques wherever they are appropriate, including the direct anterior approach, which works between muscles rather than cutting through them. For suitable patients this can mean less tissue trauma, a lower dislocation risk, and walking on the same day as surgery. Where it benefits accuracy of implant positioning, robotic-assisted technology is also available.

Your surgeon will recommend the approach that fits your anatomy and your goals. There is no single technique that is right for everyone, and being told so honestly is part of good surgical care.

Are you a candidate for hip replacement?

Hip replacement is a quality-of-life operation. The question is not simply whether your X-ray looks bad, but whether your hip is stopping you from living the life you want.

Hip replacement may be right if you have

  • Hip pain that limits walking, bending, stairs or sleep
  • Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or bone-on-bone joint damage
  • Pain that persists despite physiotherapy, medication or injections
  • Avascular necrosis, hip dysplasia or a previous hip fracture
  • A willingness to commit to rehabilitation afterward

What your surgeon will assess

  • Your imaging, including X-rays and any MRI or CT you already have
  • Your overall health, medications and readiness for anesthesia
  • Your anatomy, which guides whether the anterior approach suits you
  • Your goals, from returning to work to returning to sport
  • Whether a non-surgical option is still the better path for you

Not sure whether you qualify? Share your imaging and history with us. If surgery is not the right answer for you, we will tell you so honestly. Ask a coordinator.

Your recovery, step by step.

Recovery is a progression, not a single moment. Here is what most patients can expect, with your surgeon and rehabilitation team guiding every stage.

Surgery Day

With muscle-sparing techniques, many patients stand and take their first steps the same day, with support.

First Week

Home with a walker or crutches. Focus is on gentle movement, pain control and managing swelling.

Building Strength

Physiotherapy ramps up. Many patients move off walking aids and return to desk work in this window.

Daily Life

Most everyday activities resume. Driving typically returns once you can react safely and are off narcotics.

Full Return

More demanding work, travel and low-impact sport generally resume, with strength continuing to improve.

Timelines are typical ranges, not promises. Your recovery depends on your health, your surgical approach and your commitment to rehabilitation. Your surgeon will give you a plan specific to you, and ACCESS coordinates your follow-up care close to home.

What does private hip replacement cost in Canada?

There is no single price for a hip replacement, and any website that hands you one is quoting a case it has never seen. Your cost is shaped by your hip, your surgeon and your plan.

Rather than post a number that may have nothing to do with your situation, we do something more useful: we review your imaging and your history, then give you one written, all-inclusive quote before anything is booked. The figure you approve is the figure you pay.

  • Your surgical approach. Muscle-sparing and robotic-assisted techniques carry different costs.
  • Your implant. Materials and designs vary, and your surgeon chooses what suits your anatomy and activity level.
  • The facility and province. Operating room and facility fees differ across the network.
  • The complexity of your case. Revision surgery and complicating factors require more time and resources.
  • Your recovery plan. Whether you benefit from an overnight stay, and what rehabilitation you need afterward.

Worth asking your coordinator about: third-party financing is available through established partners, and some private medical expenses may qualify for the Canada Revenue Agency's Medical Expense Tax Credit. Certain extended health plans also cover related costs such as physiotherapy. We will walk you through all of it.

Straight answers to what patients ask us most about private hip replacement in Canada.

There is no single price, because no two hips are the same. Your cost depends on the surgical approach, the implant your surgeon selects, the facility, the complexity of your case and your recovery plan. Instead of quoting a range that may not apply to you, ACCESS reviews your imaging and history and gives you one written, all-inclusive quote covering the surgeon, anesthesia, facility, implant and coordination. Nothing is booked until you have that number and you are comfortable with it. Financing options and the CRA Medical Expense Tax Credit may also apply, and your coordinator will walk you through both.

Canada's national benchmark for hip replacement is 182 days, about 26 weeks, from the date you are ready for surgery. Roughly two thirds of patients receive surgery within that benchmark, down from about three quarters before the pandemic, and waits vary widely by province. Many Canadians wait far longer, and that figure does not include the time already spent waiting to see the surgeon.

Consultations are often available within days, and surgery is frequently scheduled within two to four weeks of that consultation. Your exact timeline depends on your medical readiness, any pre-operative testing you need and surgeon availability.

Modern hip implants are highly durable, and the large majority of patients get well over a decade of function, with many lasting considerably longer. Longevity depends on your age, your activity level, your weight and the implant used. Your surgeon will discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation.

The direct anterior approach reaches the hip from the front, working between muscles instead of cutting through them. For suitable patients it can mean less tissue trauma, a lower dislocation risk and faster early mobility. It is not automatically the right choice for everyone, and body type, anatomy and previous surgery all matter. Your surgeon will recommend the approach that is genuinely best for you.

No referral is required to begin. Contact us directly, share any imaging or reports you already have, and we will arrange your consultation with a fellowship-trained hip surgeon.

Yes. Travelling within Canada for privately funded surgery is a legitimate, well-established pathway, and coordinating it is exactly what ACCESS does. We arrange your consultation, your surgery date, your travel and accommodation, and we coordinate follow-up care close to your home.
